PASSPORT TO NATURE FAMILY OUTING: SPRING VALLEY STATE PARK

Explore nature close to home with a Straub Outdoors educator! This 90-minute guided outing will take participants through Spring Valley State Park, a few miles northwest of Keizer. Practice orienteering and learn about the plants, trees, and animals that live along Spring Valley Creek and the Willamette River. Join us for our final “Passport to Nature” family outing of the season!

Location: Meet at the Spring Valley State Park parking lot and look for our Straub Outdoors educator holding the Passport to Nature sign. Please arrive a few minutes early.

Cost: $5 for 1 child | $10 for 2 children | $15 for 3 or more children ages 3-11. Cash or check accepted. Includes a nature journal for each child.

Come visit us at the Salem River to Ridge After Party! We will be leading a series of 30-minute “Nearby Nature” walks at Noon, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm for families attending the event. Learn about the historic Silver Falls State Park and complete a nature scavenger hunt! Stop by our booth near Picnic Shelter B, in the South Falls Day Use Area, to find out about our upcoming programs, create your own nature bookmark, and to join us for a “Nearby Nature" walk!

CALL FOR YOUNG ARTISTS: WILLAMETTE VALLEY WILDLIFE EXHIBIT

Deadline for art submissions: Saturday, November 3

All K-12 students in public, private, charter or homeschool are invited to submit one work of nature-themed art for a youth exhibition in our Eco Hub gallery at the Willamette Heritage Center.

Guidelines:

  • Artwork should depict a native animal (a mammal, bird, fish, insect, or other wild critter) that lives in the Willamette Valley.

  • Artwork can also portray a landscape in the Willamette Valley that shows where native animals live.

  • All art should be on paper, measure 8.5 x 11 inches, and be suitable to mount on a wall (sorry, no 3-D work or art on canvas).

  • Art will be mounted on foamcore for the exhibition and will be returned to each student after the exhibition end date.

  • This exhibit is open to the first 50 students who submit work; there is no fee to enter.

  • Submissions can be dropped off Friday, November 2, from 3:00-6:00 pm and on Saturday, November 3, from 12:00-5:00 pm or by appointment.

Learn about cultivated and wild spaces and visit the 400-year-old Signature Oak tree! Explore nature close to home with a Straub Environmental Center educator! This 90-minute guided outing will highlight the wetland creatures that call this park home. Search for animal tracks as we explore the Willamette Slough. This outing will take place weather permitting; please bring shoes and clothing suitable for wet and muddy conditions, water, and a snack. Passport to Nature outings take place on the 4th Saturdays of each month through October. 

Location: Meet at Parking Lot #3 off of Minto Island Rd. and look for our Straub Environmental Center educator holding the Passport to Nature sign. Please arrive a few minutes early.

WILD TRACKERS CAMP: FOR KIDS ENTERING GRADES 4-7

Explore nature this summer! Wild Trackers, our week-long summer day camp for students entering grades 4-7, provides hands-on experiences to learn about our Willamette Valley environment and natural resources. 

With a teacher-student ratio of 1:5 and a small-group environment, our campers enjoy in-depth learning experiences through daily field trips to local parks and natural areas in the Willamette Valley including Drift Creek Falls, Savanna Haven, and Wildwood Recreation Site.  At these sites they will carry-out scientific investigations and learn how to be good stewards of the natural world. This camp includes an overnight camp-out on Thursday night. 

Location: The drop-off/pick-up location for each day is at the Eco Hub. 

Tuition: $275/child. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.

School's out, now let's get outside to learn! Nature Rangers, our week-long summer day camp for students entering grades 2-3, inspires curiosity, cooperation and multi-sensory connections with nature.

If your child loves nature, our one-week day camps (8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday-Friday) offer outdoor educational activities led by natural science educators in a fun, supportive environment: 

Nature Rangers: July 9-13, 2018 | Students entering Grades 2-3 (Tuition: $235/child) 

Wild Trackers: July 16-20, 2018 | Students entering Grades 4-7 (Tuition: $275/child) 

Each camp is limited to 10 participants. Camp for Grades 4-7 will include an overnight camp-out on Thursday night.
