I was 10 years old in that moment.
I always loved playing outside with my friends, especially at night when there were no cars around.
However, there was one place in particular where my friends and I always loved to go; a wide, lowered piece of ground that we called “The Pit”.
The pit was a place I went to meet with my friends after a long day of school. We played baseball and rode our bikes there. It was really wide which meant that we didn’t have to worry about breaking or hitting something like we had to at home.
There was also a creepy old barn at the far back side of the pit where no one went because we thought it was one of the scariest things there, but because my friends and I taught ourselves to be daring we kept trying to make plans to go. One day my friend and I were the only ones at the pit, and this was when we first decided venture into the creepy barn.
We approached the barn and went on an adventure to see what was inside. We had decided to split up because we thought that would be the best way to cover all of the grounds. After awhile my friend ran past me screaming and I looked back to see a dog running straight at him! We ran up a tree to escape, but the dog came closer. We both saw that the dog was waiting there on the ground for us to jump down, and we spent around 30 minutes in the tree before it finally left. I ran back towards the pit and made it in one piece! However, that wasn’t the end; the dog came back after hearing me, and my friend and I had to jump over a fence to get away. After that, the dog finally ended up leaving us alone and we ran back to the other end of the pit. In that moment we made a pact to never go to back to the barn and I still never have. In the end, we learned that sometimes, like in the case of the old barn, images can be deceiving- especially when you’re outdoors!
